His practice began with collecting discarded objects from the streets and basketball courts of Manhattan and Brooklyn. By reorganizing worn basketballs, abandoned nets, and other found materials, Winston transforms overlooked objects into records of use, aspiration, and collective experience.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn \u003cem\u003eMiami Spice\u003c\/em\u003e, Winston arranges sixteen used basketballs into a precise four-by-four grid. Each ball bears the marks of its former life: faded branding, scuffed surfaces, discoloration, and the physical wear of repeated play. Fixed within a steel framework, the discarded objects are transformed into a unified sculptural composition without losing their individual histories.The orderly grid contrasts with the irregularity of the weathered basketballs, balancing repetition with variation. Winston refers to these traces of use as “embedded history,” treating each object as a record of the people and places it has encountered.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWinston’s work has been presented internationally, with solo exhibitions at Cranbrook Art Museum, Library Street Collective, Stems Gallery, Volery Gallery, and LANDMARK and Belowground in Hong Kong.
